A scientist's position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric which specifically includes only the papers and citations relevant to the examined discipline—mathematics in this instance—thereby offering a focused measure of discipline-specific research excellence.
Scope of Research and Ranking Criteria
The ranking is based on a broad examination of 279,971 scientist profiles gathered from a diverse range of bibliometric data sources spanning all research disciplines, with a dedicated focus on 25 scientists specializing in Mathematics within Finland. To qualify for inclusion, a researcher’s D-index needed to be at least 30, and the majority of their tier publications had to be centered within the field of Mathematics.
Additional qualitative factors, including awards and notable achievements specific to the mathematics discipline, were also incorporated to ensure a nuanced evaluation of each candidate’s contributions.
The D-index threshold for consideration was calibrated in increments of 10 according to the total estimated number of scholars within each discipline, ensuring that the top 1% of leading experts were consistently captured. Furthermore, it was required that there be a proximity of 30% or less between a scientist’s overall H-index and their discipline-specific D-index to maintain disciplinary relevance and consistency.
Verification Practices and Metrics Transparency
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone does not fully capture the complexity of scholarly output, the Research.com team engaged in meticulous manual verification of all scientist profiles. This included rigorous cross-correlation of publication records across various trustworthy databases and publication sources to verify authorship and research activity.
Although the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not influence a researcher’s ranking position, it serves as a valuable secondary indicator of their impact within the field. The final ranking positions are, however, strictly based on each researcher’s verified D-index computed from data sourced primarily from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent and respected bibliometric databases currently available to the global research community.
